How much do you think ham radios will progess in the next 100 years? Do you think it will be as impressive as the previous 100 years?

I think it probably won't be as impressive because the mechanisms of radio are very well understood at this point. New things are happening like cell phones, but with cell phones, they are just using higher frequencies. This just makes them have to put all of the towers that have antennas closer together. The radio waves are traveling in the same manor.

I honestly don’t think there will be as much progress in the next 100 years compared to the previous 100. People seem to be more interested in using and learning about other means of communications.

To infinity?

The amount of progress that has been made in the sciences within the past 20-30 years is monumental. I think that we will experience things in 100 years that we can't even imagine today. When I was a child I would have laughed if someone had suggested I would have all the information in the world available in my pocket. Yet, here we are.

I feel that as we expand further into space and with the possibility of placing colonies on other planets the importance of radio will grow exponentially.

That's a very good point Beeebo, I haven't thought of that. I personally think there is always room for improvement for the ham radio. Someone will think of something that will make the radio better.......especially if we need them on other planetary bodies.

Will we need radios to communicate as time goes by?

I have spent a lot of time (nearly 60 years) using communication devices (radios) and there has not been a moment that new products and practices failed to come to light. When I started vacuum tubes was the state of the art. I collected tubes and over the years saved thousands of all types. Now they are considered antique and every thing is solid state. Humans will never stop inventing and trying new devices.
I am going to say some very weird things now as well as ask a question. Will we need radios to contact anyone in the universe sometime in the future?
It is a fact that we already have the ability to send signals anywhere in space but we cannot communicate with others who are light years away now.
However, it is a proven fact that others beings are able to carry on instant (timely) communications with their home ports from our planet.
I guess the questions might be what is the nature of the communication devices they use to communicate and when will we discover the secrets of the new methods?

There will be many technological advancements pertaining to ham radio. One development that is bound to happen is the introduction of advanced transmitters that will be capable of generating multiple signals without the need of intermodulation products.

Thought transference

I don't want anyone to get the idea I am some kind of "nut" but feel that I should insert these thoughts into the question of how communication will change over time. Have you ever wondered if it is possible to communicate long distances without any of our imagined advanced "radio devices".
Let me give you a web address where I was using a different user name which is "Vagabond" so you can get an idea what my thoughts are about advanced communications devices. If you remember we could communicate short distances by wire (telegraph and telephone) long before the radio was invented. The events in the story I relate came about years ago and some of the events partially return to me but I am not able to remember everything that happened. However I get flashes at times where there was communications taking place with  some method of thought transference.
Anyway, check another forum at http://1rnrwz3liy.talkiforum.com/20160420/scariest-encounter-5211218/
and scroll down to the description by "Vagabond" of his encounter with "beings" who from time to time now is aware that communications without radio is possible by advanced creatures. These things happened over 70 years ago. We have made a lot of progress over our short existence. How much more will be discovered over the eons to come. smiley: alien
