We must have seen antennas being placed inside or outside the room. External antennas seem to operate better because the location usually prevents interference from surrounding objects. Which one is preffered? Are there instances where we absolutely must have only internal or external antennas?

Well, most tuners today come with an internal antenna built in. Do you know if your tuner has one or not? I think the decision has a lot to do with the SWR (standing wave ratio).

I think that in the case of an internal antenna it does not give the range that an external one can. The external antenna being higher can give a better range whereas this becomes a limiting factor for internal antennas.

From what I heard, both are useful but eventually external antenna does most work well so we don't really need the internal antenna. While tuning, internal antenna must be turned off. Once the external antenna is tuned, the signal reception is good enough that most people don't turn on the internal antenna.
