I am used to using my laptop while placing it on my lap but it gets so hot with time. The fans as well produce a funny sound and I was told this could be because of the blockage of the fans underneath the laptop.

How then can I best use my laptop to ensure that I do not strain it, so to speak?

I've heard that it actually doesn't matter what surface we put our laptop on, as long as there is space between. It gets hot easily if there machine is in direct contact with complete solid object. That's why people put external fan below the laptop so it won't be too hot.

In this case then, I think I will get the external fan. Is it any better when I use it on a desk because I cannot quickly think of a surface that is not solid?

I had never considered the external fan. How much does it approximately cost? My laptop often gets too hot but I cannot quickly think of a surface that is not completely solid.
