I would not call myself much of a technical person but I was just wondering if it makes a difference to purchase a 64-bit laptop over a 32-bit one? I am seeking to replace the one I have now after 5 or so years of good service. Lately though, it has started developing problems and takes a long time to boot.

I think it has more to do with the operating system. The 32-bit bit or 64-bit refers to the way the CPU handles information. They are both versions of Windows with the 64-bit able to handle large amounts of Random Access Memory (RAM) more effectively than the 32-bit.

I am trying to check whether my laptop is 32-bit or 64-bit but I cannot find a straightforward way like it was with Windows 7 or Windows 8. Either way, I think it does not matter which one of the two versions you settle on. My guess is that if you are a gamer, go for the 64-bit one.

Could you go into detail about the start-up? How long does it take to get from hearing the beep (or whatever is produced for POST) to the login screen? Then, how long does it take to go from the login to the desktop (in such a way that it doesn't really lag). It's possible that you have too many programs on your computer.
