I read at http://1rnrwz3liy.talkiforum.com/ about using ham radios to get weather-related information. Seems helpful when there are risks of weather getting worse, such as hurricane, flood, or more serious natural disasters. Last time it rained while sun was still out, so maybe I should start preparing for the worst.

Do you know about the radius of such radio broadcast? My family lives at a tropical country where they often hear volcanoes getting active suddenly after years of no activity. This sounds like a good method to keep in touch with latest updates of the situation, but I'm not sure if the radio covers their area as well.

When I first heard about Ham radios when I was a kid, that's what I thought their main purpose was. Actually, for communication when the power went out so you could stay in touch with others a few miles away.
