IOTA News

15 March, 2010

Island activities:
EU-127. (IOTA/WFF Op)
A German team will be activating Neuwerk Island and the National Park Hamburg Wadden Sea (WFF DLFF-005) between March 19-21st using the callsigns DA0GLH and DF0WFF.
Their QTH will be from a building by the lighthouse on Neuwerk. This building is 700 years old (the oldest building of Hamburg City) – therefore the callsign DA0GLH will be used and a special DOK"700NWK" number will be provided.
Access to the island is only possible during low tide. In case of bad weather, the German team will not be able to go to Neuwerk. Operations are expected to start very late on the 19th, and they will stay for about 48 hours.
Operators mentioned are: Matthias/DK7LV, Peter/DJ4RU, Friedrich/DL4BBH, Henning/DB5BZ, Helmut/DL1BGC, Ric/DL2VFR, Frank/DL2SWW and Gabi/DF9TM. Activity will be on all HF bands using CW, SSB and PSK, as well as 2m and 70cm on FM.
QSL via the DARC Bureau for both callsigns. If necessary, direct via DL2VFR. They will upload the logs to the WFF log search Web page at: http://www.wff-dl.de

EU-118. RARE IOTA (Update)!
Operators Oscar/EA1DR, George/EA2TA, Christian/EA3NT, Col/MM0NDX, Vincent/F4BKV and Bjorn/SM0MDG are planning a DXpedition to Flannan Isles (an extremely difficult island to land on) between June 18-21st. Last activation was in 2002 (also in 1989 and 1995). Callsign will be MS0INT.
Their main target will be working as many JA stations as possible and giving everyone a fair chance of working the EU-118 IOTA reference. Therefore, they aim to be active on 80-10 meters trying to get advantage on the best bands, with 2 simultaneous stations on the air (possibly 3 stations in daylight), one on CW and another on SSB. They state, "Since our stay on the island is limited, please remember that 1 QSO will be enough, no matter the band."
QSL Manager will be M0URX. The team is still looking for
sponsors. For updates, visit their Web page at:
http://www.ms0int.com

NA-182. (Update)
John, VE8EV, is planning to activate Greens Island in the Northwest Territories (NWT) in the Inuvik Region East Group between April 15-20th. As a SSB only operator, John would like to bring along a good CW operator too. He would also like to have the 2nd operator to be able to coordinate
a fundraising campaign and not be afraid of a little winter
Arctic camping.
If interested in participating in this IOTA operation, please contact John at: ve8ev@arrl.net
Visit John's Blog page at: http://ve8ev.blogspot.com
Online logs will be uploaded as soon as possible after the
operation.

NA-231. As this was being typed, there was news of a search and rescue for Cezar, VE3LYC, who was active as VY0V for a short time from East Pen Island (a new IOTA), Nunavut.
Reports indicate that Cezar was in "fierce rain and wind, visibility poor, he had no water, no fire, no gas for generator, battery getting low, and native guide had abandoned him 38 hours ago. He was worried and seemed delirious, rambling on while running down his battery." For
updates, watch the DX-World.Net Web page at: http://dx-world.net
LAST MINUTE ADDITION: It was reported late Thursday night that Cezar is now SAFE and back at Fort Severn, which is about 120km from East Pen Island. Read the complete details at the above mentioned Web site.

IOTA News: Island activities - 28 November, 2010

AS-127 (Update/Rare IOTA) Last week we reported that operators Tutul S21RC, Manjurul S21AM, Sohel S21S and Aminul S21D were preparing a DXpedition in February 2010 to St. Martin's Island located in Chittagong Region Group. The operation will take place between February 21-25th. The group has requested the callsign S21DX. St. Martin is the only coral island in Bangladesh (S2), and there is also a lighthouse on the Island (WLOTA #2351) very near their camp site. There is no electricity and no motor vehicles on the Island which makes the air interference free. They team plans to have two stations on the air with a few antennas like last time. To power the stations they will use 1KVA generator and 2x 115AH batteries. QSL Manager will be EB7DX. The group is looking for sponsors/funds.

EU-042. Operators Jens/DK8MIL, Thomas/DK9BTX, Mathias/DJ9MD and Jan/DK7JAN will be active as DF0TM from Amrum Island (GIA N-018, WLOTA LH-2464) between April 23-26th. The team has chosen to activate this island because, according to the RSGB IOTA statistics, only 51% of ham participants to the program have received the accreditation for EU-110. Their goal is to contact as many operators as possible. They will be active on the HF band (80-6m) using CW, SSB and RTTY, with 3 or 4 stations on the air. Their plans will try to keep 1 station active 24 hours. They will try to stay around IOTA frequencies.

Herm is quite interesting as there are no less than four WAB squares on the Island (North East WV48, North West WV38, South East WV47 and South West WV37). Kevan like everyone who visits this island, may have restrictions as to where he can operate from but is hoping to try and activate all the WAB areas on the island. This trip is ahead of a possible larger scale trip next year with a few operators.

Look for many stations to be active at the same time.
Activity will be on all bands 80-6 meters using CW, SSB and
RTTY/PSK31. During the IOTA Contest, a station will be dedicated to the contest exclusively on SSB and CW. QSL via VE2CQ, direct or by the Bureau. The festival originates from the local custom dating back to the Heian period (13th century), called 'toka' or 'matsubayashi,' during which the local people praised the feudal lord on the occasion of New Year. The festival was first referred to as 'Dontaku' in the Meiji period (late 19th century) when the once-prohibited 'matsubayashi' was revived. From: Dave - K4SSU Hi Dave Hope u well. Just for your info..Pierre ZS1HF is now on Marion Island. I have spoken to him on 20m and 40m. He is currently signing ZS8/ZS1HF until 12 May 2010. He is just waiting for the re-supply ship, the SA Aughulas to leave and then he will be using ZS8M. He is using the opportunity to set up antennas etc. I am not sure what antennas he will be using, but it wont be yagi type antennas due to antenna restrictions imposed by the government ... due to the island being a reserve and the tree huggers worrying about the bird life. The weather will also be a factor due to the prevailing winds that tend to blow any antennas to pieces. I am hoping he will be erecting some vertical antennas..I know he was trying to get hold of a SteppIR vertical. He has a Icom Transceiver (not sure what model) and an amp capable of running about 500 watts I believe. I am now also in touch with him on Skype. I will keep you informed. 73 John ZS4S
